GLENDALE, CA – Residents of Glendale woke up to an extraordinary sight this morning as a small herd of elephants, including at least one juvenile, was discovered roaming city streets after apparently escaping the nearby Los Angeles County Zoo. The audacious breakout, which occurred sometime overnight, has prompted a multi-agency response and a flurry of bewildered social media posts.
The initial alarm was raised just before 6:00 AM when Glendale Police Department received calls reporting large animals, unmistakably elephants, near Brand Boulevard and San Fernando Road. Subsequent sightings have placed the majestic pachyderms in residential neighborhoods west of the Ventura Freeway and even briefly on the outskirts of the Glendale Galleria shopping center, though early morning hours meant minimal public interaction.
