YKS 2026 "Changes" Spark Alarm, Then Laughter: An April Fools' Twist

An announcement circulating widely this past week sent ripples of both concern and confusion through Turkey's student population and education community. Purportedly from ÖSYM, the Student Selection and Placement Center, the statement detailed "new decisions" regarding the 2026 Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), promising significant overhauls to the testing format. Yet, what began as serious news quickly unfolded into a clever April Fools' Day jest.
The initial notice outlined several substantial changes, primarily focusing on the Basic Proficiency Test (TYT) session. According to the circulated information, a pilot program would introduce a new application for the TYT's Turkish and Mathematics sections. Instead of the familiar multiple-choice format, some questions in these tests would reportedly shift to a "short-answer" format. This would require candidates to provide numerical or word-based answers, writing them directly rather than marking options on an optical form. To accommodate this new question style, the TYT session was slated for an additional 15 minutes, extending the total exam duration.
The purported changes were not confined to the TYT alone. For the Field Proficiency Test (AYT) session, while no duration change was mentioned, the announcement suggested an increase in "new generation interpretation questions" across certain subjects. ÖSYM officials, in the circulated text, justified these modifications by stating they were designed to better measure students' interpretation and information utilization skills, moving beyond rote memorization. It was further indicated that the detailed guidelines for these changes would be included in next year's exam guide, with an official announcement expected in the coming weeks.
