City Hall was abuzz this morning as officials sheepishly admitted that yesterday's announcement regarding a ban on dogs over 50 pounds in all city parks was, in fact, an April Fools' Day joke gone awry. The news, initially delivered via a press release that cited "growing safety concerns" and "a series of unfortunate squirrel-related incidents," sparked immediate and widespread outrage amongst dog owners.
Social media platforms were flooded with angry posts, online petitions quickly gathered thousands of signatures, and even a small protest was organized outside City Hall, with residents holding signs reading "Big Dogs Need Parks Too!" and "Shame on You!".
"We completely misjudged the reaction," admitted City Spokesperson Brenda Miller at a hastily called press conference this morning. "The intention was lighthearted, a bit of harmless April Fools' fun. We never anticipated the level of concern and, frankly, anger it would generate."
