Kansas City, MO – For half a century, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has been quietly revolutionizing academic support with its Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. Founded in 1973, SI takes a proactive approach to student success, focusing on traditionally difficult courses rather than singling out individual students.
The program's core principle is simple yet effective: integrate course content with effective reasoning and study skills. SI leaders, students who have previously excelled in the targeted course, attend lectures and facilitate engaging study sessions. These sessions are designed to help students master the material, develop critical thinking abilities, and improve their overall learning strategies.
Unlike traditional tutoring, SI is non-remedial. It's open to all students in the course, creating a collaborative learning environment where everyone can benefit from peer support and enhanced understanding. By addressing the inherent challenges of specific courses, SI levels the playing field and empowers students to achieve their full potential.
