Stanford, CA – In a surprise announcement that has left many students reeling, Stanford University has officially banned all poker games on campus, effective immediately. The decision, communicated via an email to the student body early this morning, cites a growing concern regarding the proliferation of unregulated, underground poker tournaments.
University administrators explained that the ban stems from an increase in reports of high-stakes games occurring in dorm rooms and off-campus residences, often involving significant amounts of money. Concerns were raised about the potential for exploitation, gambling addiction, and other risks associated with these informal tournaments.
"The university has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our students," stated Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Patricia Ramirez, in a press release. "While we recognize that many students enjoy playing poker recreationally, the rise of these underground tournaments presents unacceptable risks. We believe this ban is necessary to protect our community."
